Final run-in before the first school year of Digital Systems for Humans Graduate School

The Digital System for Humans Graduate School (DS4H) was awarded the prestigious EUR label (PIA3 École Universitaire de Recherche) by the French government. Amplifying the activity of all regional actors in digital systems research, development, and social sciences for digital systems, this 10-year project aims at developing new Master and PhD curricula as well as supporting research and innovation in these areas.
Started in 2018, DS4H will undergo its first academic year in next September. The ground was prepared last spring with an augmented education program, reshaping the Master tracks of UCA and SKEMA in Computer Science, Electronics, Digital Economy, Digital Law, Digital Businesses and many others. The new Master tracks leverage DS4H partners education capabilities by proposing cross-disciplinary Minors, multidisciplinary projects and individualized curricula construction to better prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century.
DS4H Master tracks will prepare students for various professional activities in research, higher education, industry and entrepreneurship. It will facilitate studies continuation towards a PhD in the rich ecosystem of UCA. With the inauguration of its education program in September, DS4H is in the final run-in to welcome a new generation of students very soon.

FORUM NUMERICA seminars The «Networks, Information and Digital society» Academy of Excellence launched in the spring a series of seminars dedicated to the digital sciences and their impact on the society and humans. These seminars replace the former Labex seminars. The program is available on the website of the Academy. To keep notified about the next events, please send a email to the maling-list .

PhD fellows have the possibility to earn credits (4 seminars = 1 ECTS) on the basis of a certificate of attendance. For more information please contact Olga Kieffer, RISE Academy Project Officer.

Ongoing calls for projects

UCA/RISE Academy/Labex joint call for projects laureates Here are the 8 projects that are going to be funded by the RISE Academy:

Three additional projects that were submitted to other academies will also be co-funded by the RISE Academy:

  • AMPUERO (Physics of earthquake rupture and fault growth: multi-scale modeling of material failure)

Positive results for the "Rendez-vous Entreprises d'Université Côte d'Azur" This was an intensive networking day! About 40 companies met mobilized researchers and UCA staff during preprogrammed appointments to consider new collaborative projects.

This openness of Université Côte d'Azur to the socio-economical world already achieved successful projects. Five success stories were awarded, including the RISE Academy ACTIVATE project led by Lucile Sassatelli (I3S). This project deals with the streaming of 360° video consuming less bandwith and taking into account the movement of the user's field of vision. This prize rewards the collaboration between the I3S laboratory and Adastra Films, a film production and distribution company based in Cannes.

Second place award at DASH Industry Forum Excellence in DASH at ACM MMSys 2018 for Savino Dambra, Giuseppe Samela, Lucile Sassatelli, Romaric Pighetti, Ramon Aparicio Pardo and Anne-Marie Pinna-Déry with their paper Film Editing: New Levers to Improve VR Streaming (TOUCAN-VR project).

Best paper at SAC 2018 for 3 researchers from I3S The paper "Assessing the Functional Feasibility of Variability-Intensive Data Flow-Oriented Systems" of Sami Lazreg (PhD fellow, CIFRE I3S-Visteon Software Technologies), Philippe Collet (Pr UNS) and Sébastien Mosser (MCF UNS) won the Best Paper award at the international conference SAC 2018 held on April 9-13 in Pau.

Best Paper at EKM 2018 for WIMMICS team members During the 3rd EKM Educational Knowledge Management Workshop held in Lyon on April 23-27, Catherine Faron-Zucker and Oscaro Rodriguez Rocha, members of the joint I3S/Inria Wimmics project-team, were awarded Best Paper Award for their contribution entitled "Automatic Generation of Quizzes from DBpedia According to Educational Standards"

French-American Doctoral Exchange Program. On June, 25th and 26th, the I3S laboratory welcomed 10 American and 10 French students for the 2018 edition of the FADEx focusing on AI. The FADEx program was created in 2014 by the Office for Science and Technology (OST) of the Embassy of France in the United States. This program aims to enhance scientific exchanges between American and French PhD students working in the same field of research in order to encourage the development of French-American collaborations. This program also serves as an opportunity for American students to better understand the French research system and to get information about post-PhD opportunities. Program here

Smart vehicles. Inria unveils its White Paper on Autonomous and connected vehicles in which it identifies and highlights all the issues surrounding the major advances and innovations in this field. What are the technological and scientific challenges, the economic, social and environmental issues, and the legal and ethical implications? This White Paper is a reference text that evaluates, questions and looks ahead. Read more

Visiting Researcher: Eugene Syriani (University of Montreal)

Eugene Syriani is an expert in software engineering and model-driven engineering. His research goal is to provide tools and techniques for software engineers and experts in other science and engineering disciplines that improve their productivity and help them produce artifacts of high quality. In particular, his recent contributions are on automatic generation of full-stack software, engineering domain-specific languages and modeling environments, and model transformation.

The Académie d'excellence "Réseaux, Information Société Numérique" has supported a one-month visit at the I3S SPARKS team, in June 2018, to work on integrating new interaction medium and devices in current practices on collaborative modeling. The collaboration with Professor Sebastien Mosser (I3S - UNS) and other professors from the department were very fruitful and have led to several collaboration points that will be followed up in the near future.

Eugene Syriani is an associate professor in Computer Science at the University of Montreal. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2011 and holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computer Science since 2006, both at McGill University. He also pursued postdoctoral research on model transformation for automotive systems at McGill. Before joining the University of Montreal, Eugene was an assistant professor at the University of Alabama for three years. He is currently leading several projects on model-driven engineering in Canada, focusing on collaborative domain-specific modeling environments and model-based reverse engineering of legacy systems. He is on the program committee and organizes several international conferences and workshops, and serves as referee in many journals in modeling and simulation.

Visiting Researcher Permanent Calls The Labex UCN@Sophia and the RISE Academy are both funding invited researchers who strengthen the bounds between UCA and prestigious foreign institutions. Read more about the Labex and the Academy visiting professor schemes.

eModus The MOBI project funded by the Labex UCN@Sophia offers solutions for Building Information Modeling (BIM) based on wireless sensor network communications. In collaboration between the innovative startup eModus and the LEAT laboratory, this project aims at leveraging algorithms as well as a modeling and simulation environment previously developed in the laboratory. The objective is then to explore - through simulation - solutions fully compliant with the main functional requirements such as the latency and the autonomy of sensing nodes.

The simulation environment, taking into account radio channel conditions such as fading, is already able to handle up to 100 sensor nodes connected to a central base station. In the use case shown on the video, the base station periodically collects information from sensing nodes deployed within the Business Pôle building of Sophia Antipolis. Resulting simulations data are very promising and indicate that the latency, the data rate as well as the autonomy constraints can be successfully respected for this use case.

In the forthcoming months, algorithms validated through simulation will be implemented on the eModus hardware platform and then deployed in the actual building. Then, many more sensing devices will be deployed to demonstrate the scalability of the solution for buildings. Finally, eModus plans to extend the simulation environment with 3D modeling, taking into account obstacles such as walls.
