CIMPACA Design/ UCN @ Sophia Labex Day. CIMPACA Design Platform and Labex UCN @ Sophia organise a common event on the afternoon of May 26, 2015. This half day aims at presenting the research activities of Labex members, at learning the needs and problematics of the platform partners and at facilitating the implementation of new partnerships. See the detailed program.

UCN @ Sophia Labex Post-doctoral applications call. A new post-doc application call is launching with 2 positions (up to 2 years). All information about the application is available here. The application deadline is on October 9, 2015, at 5:00 p.m.

UCN @ Sophia Labex Mid-term evaluation. ANR proceeds to a special mid-term review of all Labex projects at a national scale in 2015. A scientific report of UCN @ Sophia activity (2012-2014) was submitted in March in place of the usual annual summary. UCN @ Sophia will also be presented on June 3rd in Paris, during the national Labex evaluation days. An international jury will review the Labex activity and the ANR will evaluate all Labex individually and as a whole.

IDEX UCAJedi : The IDEX project UCAJedi (Joint, Excellent and Dynamic Initiative), submitted by the “University Cote d’Azur”  ComUE, was just short-listed along with two other IDEX proposals. We wish good luck to this initiative, which represents a very important milestone in the regional research agenda.  UCAJedi is structured along 5 “excellence academies”, among which the “networks, information and digital society” academy, well aligned with the Labex UCN @ Sophia research themes.

Focus on the Invited Researcher: Elisabeth de Carvalho

Dr. Elisabeth de Carvalho received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications (ENST), France. After her Ph.D. she was a post-doctoral fellow at Stanford University, USA and then worked in industry in the field of DSL and wireless LAN. Since 2005, she has been is an associate professor at Aalborg University where she has led several research projects in wireless communications. Her main expertise is in signal processing for MIMO communications with recent focus on massive MIMO including channel measurements, channel modeling, beamforming and protocol aspects. She is a coauthor of the text book “A beginners guide to the MIMO radio channel”.

Her current research is about physical and mac layer for next generation wireless systems: multiple antenna (MIMO) communications, network MIMO, multi-user communications (precoding schemes, resource allocation, interference management), relay and cooperative wireless communications, cross-layer designs: link adaptation and retransmission schemes for MIMO systems, cognitive radio, MIMO processing for small terminals.

During her stay in Sophia Antipolis and her collaborations with the UCN @ Sophia Labex teams, she helped explore MIMO in LOS (Line Of Sight) with Signet and EURECOM teams. She talked with another UCN @ Sophia Visitor, André de Almeid (Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Fortaleza, Brazil) about "Channel Measurements and Coded Random Access for massive MIMO systems & Channel Estimation for Millimeter-Wave Very Large MIMO Systems", in the UCN @ Sophia Labex seminar  at Thursday April 2, 4pm.

Agenda
  • May 26. The common CIMPACA Design Platform/UCN @ Sophia Labex half-day
  • June 3. Oral audition of the UCN @ Sophia mid-term evaluation in Paris in face of an international jury.
  • June 25. The annual meeting of the UCN @ Sophia Labex Administrative Committee.

Open calls

Pos-doc Application Call. A new post-doc application call is launching with 2 positions (up to 2 years). The application deadline is on October 9, 2015, at 5:00 p.m.

Invited Researchers. The call for the welcome of invited Researchers is still open.

Coming Calls. A PhD applications call with 6 positions and a call for project engineers will be launched in the coming weeks

Focus on the First UCN@Sophia PhDs Day

The UCN @ Sophia Labex PhD students presented their research works during the first UCN@Sophia Labex PhDs Day held on April 24, 2015. The students made a great job of presenting their on-going work through posters and oral presentation. The slides are available from the event page. One poster and one oral presentation were selected on their scientific communication merit for an award. Congratulation to the laureates.

Focus on the MEDDAYS 2015

From 18 to 20 February, the SophiaTech Campus hold the third edition of its "Mediterranean Student Days" to inform young students from across the Mediterranean basin of the educational and research opportunities offered on  the campus. The event was coordinated and financed by UCN @ Sophia Labex, Inria, I3S (CNRS-UNS) and LEAT (CNRS-UNS). It was also supported by the ICST doctoral school and the French Institute in Greece.

In collaboration with the partner universities and schools, thirty-five students from Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey and Spain were selected on the basis of their excellent results. They spent three days finding out about the exciting range of education, research and innovation opportunities available at the Sophia Antipolis technology park. These students will become “ambassadors” back in their countries to promote the Campus. For most of them, this was the first time they left their home country. The Student Days are intended to enable these foreign students at Masters I level to find out about the different study programs and research opportunities offered on the campus. The event was focused on information sharing and making direct contacts: researchers from the various institutes based in the campus came to meet the students and present their research subjects. Presentations of the master 2 tracks were introduced. Former students were invited to share their pathways and experiences. A talk was also given on the possibilities to join companies or to create spin offs via the Paca Est Incubator. We hope that like for the two former editions of the Mediterranean days many students will join the Campus.

Focus on the "ITS" Thematic Day
On March 20, 2015 gathered the "Intelligent Transport Systems" Thematic Day researchers working in this thematic, industrial partners, representatives of the civil society interesting in this subject. This Scientific Day permitted each one listenning scientific presentations organised in 4 sessions: Session 1 : Needs and Local View of the ITS implementations; Session 2 : Local skill of the ITS implementations; Session 3 : LABEX skill in the ITS implementations; Session 4 : Round table and discussions. It was a nice opportunity to find out about the scientific improvements in ITS, to become aware of the local importance of the ITS and also to meet researchers, industrial partners and representatives of local institutions.
