Workshop "Quantum Simulation, Processing and Communication". Idex UCAJEDI Academy 1 organized a one-day workshop on quantum simulation, processing and communication. The event gathered scientists from quantum physics, photonics, computer science and telecommunications. About 40 people discussed the state of the art and perspectives for quantum technologies in the areas of computing, simulation and secured communications.

Thesis Defenses. These students are in the last part of their Labex PhD funded contracts. We wish them the best!


The Labex welcomes the 2 laureates of its last call for postdoctoral fellowships which ended on February.

  • Lara Codeca (from U. Luxembourg) will work on "Modal-IT: User-centric  Electrical Powered Two Wheelers (e-PTW) Dynamic Navigation in a Commuting Traffic Environment". She is supervized by Jérôme Härri (EURECOM).
  • Kostas Kastsalis (from  U. Thessaly, Greece) will work on "Low latency Network Slicing with Edge Caching in 5G". He is supervized by Navid Nikaein (EURECOM) and Thierry Turletti (Inria).


UCA Deep Learning School. The SophiaTech Campus hosted the first UCA Spring Deep Learning School, in partnership with Nvidia. With mornings dedicated to introductory courses, tutorials and scientific presentations of recent results, and afternoons dedicated to the realization of small projects, this intensive training event is a response to a need expressed by companies who want to update their knowledge in machine learning and IA. This first session was a sell-out and given this success, next year's edition is already in the pipeline.

EIT Digital Cities Summer School. I3S laboratory and EIT Digital Master School organize from June 25 to July 8 the summer school "Urban Mobility, Safety and Exploration" on SophiaTech Campus. It will focus on business cases where usage and current technology deficits are a decisive factor. Many major mobility, informative & safety related actors are located in Nice Sophia Antipolis region will provide insightful strategic vision about the digitalisation of their activities. Innovative City conference, the main Smart City conference in France will take place on the July 5-6, which is perfect timing to permit our summer school students to participate. AZKAR at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie. The project team WIMMICS carries out an experiment of the AZKAR project robot in the the biggest science museum in Europe in the context of the inauguration of the exhibition "Valérian et Laureline".

Interview: Vincent Prunet (Inria)

Vincent Prunet (Inria) has launched a start-up project based on Hop.js, a software suite dedicated to IoT applications development. The Labex is proud to have contributed to this adventure.


The Labex UCN@Sophia gave us the opportunity to develop user applications and test the features and usability of our framework on real use cases. A young engineer joined the team, during one year he developed connected medical applications using Hop.js. All these applications have been deployed and used by professional medical teams, leading to constant improvements all along the pilot phase.
At the end of the year, we had implemented many new features in our system to support the requirements of user applications, such as an improved security and interoperability with third party software, We had removed bottlenecks in the development process of user applications, to make it simpler and faster.

Labex's Partners News

Abeeway (PAPIoT Project).  Actility, a provider of Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) for IoT has acquired the geolocation specialist Abeeway. Abeeway makes tracking devices with on-demand geo-location, movement alerts and geo-fencing capabilities. These trackers use GPS signals to determine location, but energy-efficient LoRaWAN communication to pass the information to a tracking application. The acquisition will give Actility a best in class portfolio of IoT location services to support service providers and IoT solution vendors across a wide range of industry sectors.
No doubt this will boost the LEAT/Abeeway/Nively PAPIoT Project (Position and Activity monitoring Platform based on IoT technology) aiming at the creation of a wearable device prototype for elderly people and which was one of the laureates of the Labex 2016 R&D Call for projects.

5G in 5 minutes with R2Lab/OpenAirInterface. The Inria Sophia Antipolis - Méditerranée centre’s anechoic chamber, named R2lab (Reproducible Research LABoratory) offers several types of communication resources, wireless networks and sensor and computation cloud networks, which are available to researchers and manufacturers for experimentation purposes. It forms part of the OneLab (Open Numerical Engineering LABoratory ) European network.
Using Eurecom’s Open Air Interface tool, R2lab can deploy a complete 5G network infrastructure and remote access for performing reproducible end-to-end network experimentation with no external interference. The R2lab anechoic chamber can be used to remotely perform reproducible wireless network experimentation (5G/software-defined radio). It can be booked by external partners and used remotely. The Inria-EURECOM joint demo has been selected by ACM SIGCOMM 2017, to be held on UCLA campus in Los Angeles on August 21-25, 2017. Now watch the demo video

NFCOM (D2D Indoor Project). Laureate of the Labex UCN@Sophia 2016 call destined to joint projects between public research laboratories and enterprises (http://ucnlab.eu/fr/node/353), and beneficiary of a grant for one year research and development engineer, the D2D Indoor project is progressing towards the transfer of the above research results by Inria to the content sharing and dissemination application proposed by NFCOM, by in particular enabling multi-hop mobile-to-mobile communications.
Inria and the SME NFCOM (http://nfcom.com/) based in Nice has established a collaboration around the deployment of multi-hop mobile-to-mobile communications in the context of the NFCOM mobile application dedicated to connected stadiums and exhibition centers. The deployment of such a communication paradigm allows on one hand to extend the coverage of the cellular infrastructure (3G/4G and future 5G) and on the other hand to reduce the load on the cellular infrastructure by offloading part of the cellular traffic to direct communications between mobiles.
Leveraging recent results by the group of Chadi Barakat from the Diana Project-Team at Inria Sophia Antipolis (in particular the BitHoc solution for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, http://planete.inria.fr/bithoc/, and the HBSD solution for Disruption Tolerant Networks, http://planete.inria.fr/HBSD_DTN2/), this collaboration between NFCOM and Inria is expected to help the young SME to overcome two major technical challenges: the orchestration of communications between mobiles and the scalability of the NFCOM offer to stadiums and exhibition centers. It is indeed important in this new context to define which mobiles download content from the infrastructure and how mobiles share this content with each other. The flow of content across mobiles should be optimized for an efficient utilization of the available wireless spectrum and mobiles’ resources and for an increased robustness to mobility and link outages. Given the social nature of the NFCOM application, the consumed content presents a high degree of redundancy, thus allowing direct mobile-to-mobile communications to reduce the number of downloads from the cellular infrastructure and improves the scalability of the offered service.


Visiting Researcher: Joergen Bang-Jensen (University of Southern Denmark)

Jørgen Bang-Jensen is an expert in theory and algorithms for directed graphs. He has just completed his third stay among the Labex research teams.

His research interests include structural and algorithmic aspects of undirected graphs, discrete optimization and practical applications of combinatorial optimization. Currently his research focus is on structural and algorithmic aspects of problems related to packing covering and partitions in (directed) graphs.

Directed graphs is an area with many important practical applications (for example route planning in gps systems, (drug) network inhibition, cryptografic access control or defence logistics). It is an area of great interest for the joint INRIA and I3S team COATI as directed graphs occur in many of the problems they study. This, combined with Bang-Jensens experience in collaborating with external partners, made Sophia-Antipolis a natural place for him to visit during two 5 months sabaticals in 2010 and 2015. The second one was supported by the Labex for two months. The Labex also supported a one-month visit in June 2016 as well as one month in spring 2017.


Bang-Jensen has used these periods to work intensely with COATI researchers, most notably Frederic Havet. The visits have so far resulted in 8 joint papers.

Jørgen Bang-Jensen is professor at Department of mathematics and computer science at University of Southern Denmark. He has a Ph.D from Odense University from 1988 and a Danish Doctoral degree from University of Southern Denmark from 2002. He is the author of more than 100 journal publications.

He is a coauthor of the Springer book "Digraphs" which is the only modern book that covers thus important area in significant detail. The book has reached a wide audience and is cited almost 2000 times according to Google Scholar. For a period of 5 years Bang-Jensen was leading his departments activities related to collaboration with industry and public partners. Among other things this lead to 2 Ph.D theses and about 20 Msc. theses.

2017 R&D Call for Projects - The Laureates

The Labex UCN@Sophia 4th call for projects to fund project development engineers ended on May, 5th.

The following laureates will benefit from a 52 k€ grant for the hiring of a development engineer during one year for the maturation of their project based on the exploitation and the transfer of the research results of a Labex member laboratory.
